I’m one of those people who enjoys living life in the moment. I don’t put much thought into the future because it could easily change. But I also do like to think about all the things I can look forward to as I grow up, and also to keep me motivated in life.
I am definitely looking forward to a more Eco-friendly world in the future. Plastics is used in our everyday lives, and many of these plastics break down into micro plastics and end up back in our food chain. As more and more people start to realize the amount of micro plastics we eat on a daily basis and the long term effects, plastic-free labels may start to appear in the supermarkets. 100% plastic-free food might even become a luxury if we do not act fast. A world without plastics may seem unimaginable today, but there have been many new innovations like bio plastics and mycelium which provides more Eco friendly ways as a substitute.

By the 2030s, I hope to see carbon footprints being viewed as socially unacceptable, much like smoking in public places in Singapore. Public attention will drive governmental policies and behavioral changes. The creation of a sustainable, net-zero carbon future will be created with breakthroughs in energy harvesting. There might even be an emergence of a new carbon management industry with a diversity of new technologies and laws aimed at reducing and removing the world’s carbon emissions, comparative to the industrial and digital revolutions of the past. Also, to incentivize companies to switch to cleaner energy sources, talks will be held for a new global carbon price to be introduced, for the right to emit.
Everyone might also have their own digital twin by now. Several tools are created to make a digital map of our body, both internal and external, like more advanced versions of 3d scanning, wearable and implanted sensors. There would be a market with plenty of companies and startups creating applications based on the person’s digital twin, like dating apps, healthcare and finances. Privacy focused authorization will also allow users to decide the data that such applications will be able to access.
Advancements in neuroscience is also something that I really look forward to. I hope humans will be able to think faster by embedding processing chips in our brains or connecting it to the cloud. Also finding a way to allows us to download whatever knowledge that we want from a vast library of resources, matrix-style. Researchers are finally able to hack into the brain, decoding the brain activity of professional poker player or pilot, and use it as a benchmark to teach another person. Your crafting/culinary skills can now be open-sourced and passed down to generations of people, leaving behind a legacy in the world. Physical limits might be something that needs to be solved, but picking up new job skills might become as easy as a press of the button. With this, most of the population will be creating new skills or doing research instead, to advance humanity’s progress.
After watching many sci-fi shows like SAO, black mirror and ready player one, one thing that I’m really looking forward to though, is fully immersive VR experience. It would be able to fully interact with your senses and brain, fully unconscious of your surroundings, just like a lucid dream. It would be a very difficult feat combining biology, neuroscience and computing, but the opportunities would be endless with this. You could technically even slow down time in the virtual world, which can be used as a creative platform like Minecraft to test bed new things.
As for myself, I’m currently looking forward to university, and all the new opportunities I’ll have there. Going overseas, graduating, getting my own place to life and seeing where life takes me. Hopefully by the time I reached my 100th birthday I’d have checked off all the items on my current bucket list, as well as my big five.
