What is a flourishing life?

Settling on a universal wellbeing standard for all is challenging because life satisfaction is subjective to an individual’s ever changing state, culture, context and environment. However because it begins at the individual, we see the opportunity that wellbeing can be achieved with a carefully designed framework, supported by tools (such as transformative technology) to enable an appropriate value-based metric system that is flexible and personalised.

Flourishing to us is the ability to enhance our overall life satisfaction – where all can be our best selves to achieve city-scale flourishing. It includes engaging in activities that promote physical health, partaking in practices that nurture mental health, and having the ability to investigate our actions to make purposeful decisions. When translated to a systemic level of thinking, this would enable individuals to form strong closer relationships with others and the environment.

Future of work, living and play

As existing jobs become obsolete in the future, and with many things made on demand by the end user, concepts of “work”, “office” and “companies” will take on a different meaning.

A variety of jobs will be shifted dramatically. Some jobs will disappear and new ones will be created. More people will become independent of large corporations to be portfolio workers and on project-based engagement.

Social equality, future of education

As cash becomes less important and there is emphasis on personal skills and the community, the rich-poor gap will diminish. People will not be judged based on what schools they go to or what grades they get. There will be more encouragement for diversity in education and work choices.

Future of commons and commons as an urban practice

The future of “public infrastructure” or “commons”, will take a different form with new technologies. Citizens will be empowered to unleash their potential and enhance their quality of life in working, living, playing, civic participation and city design.

Roles of the public commons will be shifted from supporting the basic infrastructure to enriching people’s lives.

Civic participations and inclusive public spaces in local communities

In the future, civic participation will play a critical role in creating high quality and inclusive public spaces. Such spaces mediate divergent interests, and creates a greater sense of belonging which in turn promotes an improved quality of life for everyone. Technologies will analyse user behaviours/patterns data to determine social spaces.

The next decade will be marked by an explosion in city density matched by the continued acceleration of technology. The cities of the future could be dense, cold citadels of more tech and deeper human disconnection… or they could be natural humanistic cities where humans can find purpose, passion, and their best self, experience mental and emotional wellbeing, and truly flourish.

It is time to ask new questions of cities at the intersection of our technology and humanity.
